Harlem Week is August 6th through the 15th this year. And while last year’s celebrations were mostly virtual, this year is going to be “a reimagined mix of virtual and live events.” This year’s theme is:

Rebirth. Rebuild. Rejoice.

This couldn’t be more perfect after the long year we’ve had. Harlem Week is a celebration of the arts and culture, health, music, and all the amazing things Harlem and its community have to offer. Again this year, HarlemAmerica will play a part in helping to get the word out with interviews, man-on-the-street roving reporting, and concert coverage. So make sure you’re following us on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

Hyping Up Harlem

Harlem Week started as Harlem Day in 1974, and it was “a one-day event of encouragement and fellowship in Harlem for New Yorkers and beyond.” But when your home is Harlem, you know we can’t fit all of the amazing things that this community represents in a single day.

In honor of Harlem Week 2021, we thought we’d share some of the great moments from last year’s events to get you excited about this year. Check out the links below for a taste of what Harlem Week has to offer.

G Keith & Harlem Week

In 2020, G. Keith helped celebrate Harlem Day by plugging the event “Stevie Wonder in Conversation with Doug E. Fresh.” You can watch (or rewatch) the whole virtual chat here.

And in 2020, G. Keith talked with Voza Rivers and Marko Nobles, Harlem Week organizers. The conversation centered around the pandemic-led changes for the 2020 festivities and the history and legacy that Harlem Week represents. You can listen to the full conversation here.

In 2019, G. Keith, Lenny Green, and Vy Higginsen attended the grand opening of Harlem Week together. You can catch up with G. Keith and Vy on their episode of the “What’s Hot! HarlemAmerica with G. Keith Alexander” podcast here, and learn more about Lenny Green in his episode of the podcast here.

Harlem Week 2020 Highlights

Because Harlem Week 2020 was virtual, you can watch tons of highlights on the Harlem Week YouTube channel.

Listen to a performance and Harlem Week conversation with cast members from the Broadway show Girl from the North Country, which debuted on Broadway on March 5, 2020, and was shut down a week later due to the coronavirus pandemic. And when you fall in love with the cast and performance, you can book your tickets for the show’s return to Broadway this fall!

And if you want a taste of the artistry and diversity that Harlem Week 2021 will attract, check out “A Great Day in Harlem,” which features music and dance acts of local, national, and international fame. Sing along with dozens of musicians who all came together virtually to celebrate with you and inspire you. Every time I watch it, it puts a smile on my face.
