Moments For The Culture – The Importance of Bearing Witness

by Richard Lallite

It is especially poignant that at the time that I am writing this article, we as a people are watching as history repeats itself once again.

“Those Who Don’t Know History, Are Doomed To Repeat It”

It is especially poignant that at the time that I am writing this article, we as a people are watching as history repeats itself once again.  The victims and victimizers are different, the exact narrative and circumstances have changed, however the feeling of Deja Vous haunts me. I purposely avoided watching the movie Till starring the brilliant actress, Danielle Deadwyler because I wished to avoid inflicting the trauma of Emmett Till’s horrific murder upon myself yet again.  It is a sentiment that I hear from African American’s frequently nowadays, particularly those of age to have lived through it in real life, or who came of age when it was still a fresh offense against humanity.

Just a few short weeks ago Tyre Nichols, a young father and by all accounts a creative and loving human, being was on his way home to his family, having committed no offense, he was stopped by law enforcement officers, was horrifically beaten and died in the hospital a few days later, barely recognizable to his family.

“In Spite Of the Trauma . . .”

The trauma I sought to avoid is now being replayed hourly on nearly every news channel, but it made me realize the importance of bearing witness. Without a witness, these incidents are too easily swept under the rug and forgotten, only to be trivialized or denied in future generations. We must bear witness, our children must bear witness, and their children, and so on through the ages. The names of our collective lost and loved must never be forgotten. The collection of Mother’s and Father’s tears must have a witness.

In spite of the trauma, I will be a witness. I will tell the story.

It’s the vibration that focuses our formidable spiritual, artistic, political and financial power. The vibration creates “Harlem” wherever we exist in the world.
