A Very Special Welcome to HarlemAmerica
As the former host of What's Hot! New York, the music and entertainment segment of Fox 5 New York’s “The McCreary Report”, G. Keith Alexander interviewed nearly 200 of today’s R&B and Hip-Hop artists and introduced his audiences to their hot debut releases, giving many their first exposure on TV. …
Black Music Month takes place in June and is a time to celebrate the many Black artists, composers, and musicians who have made important contributions to music throughout the years. Black music—jazz, blues, gospel, R&B, hip-hop, and more—has a long and storied history, and this month celebrates that tradition. The music business owes a great debt of gratitude to the Black musicians that brought soul to Motown and hip-hop with their innovative beats and melodies.
During Black Music Month, we may commemorate the lives and work of legendary black musicians whose music has touched countless lives. Black artists add a lot to the musical scene, and now is the moment to celebrate their ingenuity, resilience, and invention. This month, we will be showcasing 4 unique artists whose talent and individual bodies of work are a shining example of what we as a people have contributed to the musical soundtrack of the world. We will highlight one artist each week, with an article, images, videos and a playlist for your education and enjoyment.
On June 5th, we feature Phyllis Hyman, who would have been turning 74 this month but for her tragic death in 1995 at the age of 45. She was a legendary performer in R&B, jazz, and soul for about three decades, during which time she became famous for her jazz-influenced style and dramatic stage presence. She may have had a tough life, but the impact her music has had on musicians throughout the years. ensures that her legacy will go on.
On June 12, we will feature amazing Will Downing. Downing’s career demonstrates his dedication to music, perseverance, and talent, making him an inspiration to young artists and a groundbreaking figure in modern R&B and jazz.
Then on June 19, chanteuse, Chante Moore will be in the HarlemAmerica spotlight. The legendary R&B and jazz singer Chanté Moore has left an everlasting impression on the music industry with her rich, expressive voice and adaptable style.
Finally on June 26, we will introduce to some and re-introduce to others, the incomparable Luke James. American musician, actor, and songwriter Luke James Boyd is well-known for his work across multiple platforms. The rise to fame of James, who was born on June 13, 1984, in New Orleans, Louisiana, is an inspiring story of skill, determination, and adaptability.
We will also be highlighting the many wonderful artists who our very own G. Keith Alexander has interviewed on HarlemAmerica’s flagship show, What’s Hot! HarlemAmerica.
As we celebrate Black Music Month, we invite you to lose yourself in the rhythms, melodies, and narratives that make up Black music right here on HarlemAmerica.
